Responsible gambling โ limits, self-exclusion and help
Gambling is paid entertainment with a negative expected value. Over a long enough run the platform wins, and no strategy changes that. Treating it as a source of income is the shortest route to debt. This page is about keeping the game inside the boundaries of entertainment.
The age is 21
In Ukraine, taking part in gambling is permitted from the age of 21. That is not an operator formality but the law, and it applies to casino games and sports betting alike. Operators check age during verification โ trying to get around it with someone else's documents ends in a blocked account and no payout.
Rules that work
- Set the budget first. Decide what you are willing to lose this month and do not revise it in the heat of a session.
- Spare money only. Never play with money meant for rent, a loan, medicine or your family.
- Do not chase losses. Trying to win back what is gone by raising stakes is the main cause of large losses.
- Time matters as much as money. Set a timer: hours in a session quietly eat an evening.
- No alcohol while playing. It removes precisely the self-control you are relying on.
- Do not borrow to play. A loan taken for a bet is no longer entertainment.
Warning signs
The problem rarely starts abruptly. Look closer if you recognise yourself:
- you think about playing when you are not playing, and plan the next session instead of working or sleeping;
- the same feeling now requires bigger stakes;
- you hide the size of your losses, or the fact that you play at all, from people close to you;
- a loss creates an urge to win it back immediately;
- you borrow money or sell things to keep going;
- attempts to stop end with a return a few days later.
Two or three matches are a reason to take a break. Four or more are a reason to ask for help.
Tools worth switching on
Limits are set in the operator's account area, not on this site โ we only explain what to look for. Typically available: a deposit limit per day, week or month, a session time limit, a "time-out" of several days, and long-term self-exclusion. Set the limit while you are calm: most platforms let you tighten one instantly but relax it only after a delay.
It also helps to remove the triggers: turn off push notifications about promotions, unsubscribe from bonus mailings, and do not store a payment card in the profile.
The state restriction register
Ukraine operates a register of people whose access to gambling venues is restricted. A self-restriction application goes through the regulator โ PlayCity. It is important to understand the limits of that tool: it binds operators that hold a Ukrainian licence. If a platform works outside the Ukrainian licensing regime, the register does not reach it, and you have to use self-exclusion inside the account itself. So an entry in the register is not a complete shield and should not be treated as one.
Where to get help
Addiction is easier to discuss with someone who is not judging you. Free support exists:
- Gamblers Anonymous โ an international mutual-help fellowship with meetings in person and online.
- BeGambleAware โ materials, self-tests and counselling in English.
- GamCare and Gambling Therapy โ two more organisations offering English-language counselling and support chats; their sites are intermittently unreachable from Ukraine, so we do not link to them directly.
If the situation is acute โ debts, thoughts of self-harm โ do not stay alone with it: reach out to the people close to you and to a doctor. A therapist who works with addiction achieves far more than another attempt to simply pull yourself together.
In short
The game has to stay what it was at the start: paid entertainment on a budget known in advance. The moment it becomes a way to earn, or a way to escape, it is time to stop.
